The 2027 scholarship competition is open. Student applications are due December 1, 2026; the program lists December 15 for counselor recommendation letters. Submit your application by December 1 rather than waiting for the later counselor deadline.
What the scholarship offers
The program advertises 20 scholarships of $40,000, distributed as $10,000 annually over four years. Awards support study at an accredited four-year U.S. college or university in any academic discipline. Scholars also receive mentoring and leadership opportunities.
Who should apply?
Black/African American students who are current high school seniors.
U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
Students with academic excellence, leadership potential, community service, and financial need.
Who was Ron Brown?
Ronald H. Brown (1941–1996) became the first Black U.S. Secretary of Commerce. An Army veteran and attorney, he worked with the National Urban League before serving in national leadership. He died during a trade mission in Croatia in 1996.
That year, Anthony M. Pilaro established the scholarship program to honor Brown’s life and carry forward his commitment to achievement, leadership, and public service. Its purpose reaches beyond college funding: it helps young people develop the relationships and confidence to make a difference.

Students: write down the moments when you helped someone, solved a problem, or stepped up when a leader was needed. Your story does not have to sound like anyone else’s.
Families and mentors: set a weekly application check-in. Help your senior request recommendations early, keep materials organized, and leave time for a careful final review.
At 100 Black Men of Coastal North Carolina, we encourage eligible seniors in Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender counties to explore this national opportunity. Share it with a student whose future you believe in.
