A college dream should not stop because a student lacks money or connections. Sometimes opportunity comes as financial help. Other times, it comes through people who believe in what you can become. The Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship offers both.

Applications are open for the 2027 Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship. Selected students can receive up to $35,000 over four years, plus mentoring, leadership development, and career guidance. Parents, mentors, and graduating seniors across New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties: this opportunity deserves your attention.

DEADLINE: Thursday, January 14, 2027, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern. The Foundation requires every application component by that time, including the recommendation and CSS Profile.

Jackie Robinson's Legacy: Breaking Barriers and Building Futures

In 1947, Jackie Robinson broke Major League Baseball's modern color barrier when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers. His courage challenged exclusion and helped open doors for those who followed. In 1973, Rachel Robinson established the Jackie Robinson Foundation to carry that commitment to education, opportunity, and leadership forward.

At the 100 Black Men of Coastal North Carolina, we see a clear connection. Mentorship is not just advice. It is helping young people find doors, prepare for what is behind them, and walk through with confidence.

The Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship Is More Than $35,000

College is expensive. Financial help can change the choices a student has. Yet the Foundation's four-year Scholars Program also invests in the person behind the transcript.

  • Up to $35,000 in college scholarship support over four years, not $35,000 each year.

  • Personalized mentoring and support through the college experience.

  • Leadership development and practical life-skills training.

  • Career guidance, professional networking, and opportunities related to internships and jobs.

  • An ongoing commitment to community service and positive impact.

And students, please hear this: you do not have to play baseball, or any sport, to qualify. This is an academic scholarship.

Who Can Apply for the Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship?

The Foundation's official eligibility requirements say applicants must:

  • Be a graduating high school senior and a United States citizen.

  • Show evidence of financial need and academic excellence.

  • Demonstrate leadership potential and a dedication to community service.

  • Plan to attend an accredited, Foundation-approved four-year college or university.

  • Have earned no more than 25% of the credits needed to graduate from college.

The primary audience is students graduating in spring 2027 who plan to attend college full-time in fall 2027. Students who graduated the year before but have not enrolled in college coursework may also qualify. You can apply before receiving your college acceptance letter.

Your Application Checklist: Don't Let One Missing Item Stop You

Strong applications are built one task at a time. Here is what students, parents, and mentors should tackle together.

  1. Start the official online application and create your student account.

  2. Gather your transcript, academic information, college plans, activities, awards, and community service experience.

  3. Prepare an ACT or SAT test score. Use scores from one test date; the Foundation does not accept a superscore.

  4. Ask one adult who knows your work to recommend you. A teacher, counselor, coach, employer, or mentor may qualify. Choose early and follow up.

  5. Submit the College Board CSS Profile for all required parent households. Select the Jackie Robinson Foundation using code 4248.

  6. Write your essays in your own voice. Explain your real experiences, goals, leadership, and service.

  7. Check that the full application, recommendation, and CSS Profile are all submitted before the January 14 deadline.

ESSAY NOTE: The current Foundation application page lists three brief essays, while its 2026–2027 flyer lists four. Follow the live application portal for your final checklist. For help, contact connect@jackierobinson.org.

IMPORTANT: The Foundation requires application writing to be the student's own work. AI-generated responses can lead to disqualification. AI tools may be used only in very limited ways, such as spelling or grammar edits.

Parents and Mentors: This Part Is for You

Do more than forward a link and hope for the best. Sit with a graduating senior for 20 minutes this week. Ask what they are proud of, who they have helped, and where they want to go. Help build a calendar. Offer to review requirements and connect them with a recommender early.

Then give the student room to speak for themselves. The strongest story is not the one an adult writes for them. It is the student's own account of what they have learned, done, and hope to contribute.

Support the process. Protect the student's voice. That is mentorship in action.

Your Future Deserves an Application

Students: Maybe you tutored a classmate, volunteered, helped a younger child, organized an event, or found a way to make life better for someone around you. That effort matters. You do not have to be famous to be a leader.

The scholarship is competitive, and applying does not guarantee an award. But don't count yourself out before anyone has even read your application.

Parents, educators, mentors, and community leaders: share this opportunity with a graduating senior today. A conversation, a reminder, or help with the paperwork could make a real difference.

The 100 Black Men of Coastal North Carolina is committed to helping young people see their potential and find resources to pursue it. Take the next step today.
